With the LTE-A testbed at Fraunhofer IIS’ in Erlangen (Germany), companies that are developing software and hardware for mobile data networks can perform tests and see how apps, applications or data transfer processes behave in the light of specific mobility criteria and under specific situations such as varying network load. The coverage of the testbed spans an area of 500 square kilometres (193 square miles).

Such tests generate valuable information on how they can improve their services. The area covered includes a heavily used autobahn, the city of Erlangen and several suburb as well as rural regions. The network consists of two locations with three macro-cells each. The latter enable users to test, among other technologies, LTE-A broadcast in a real-live environment. Tests can be conducted with commercially available terminal devices on the 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz frequency bands. The network is operated by Fraunhofer IIS, the base stations (eNodeB) have been provided by Nokia Networks. The base stations will be equipped with Mobile Edge Computing technology which enables users to execute time-critical and bandwidth-intensive applications locally at the base station instead of routing the data through the network.

The testbed is open for interested companies and organisations within the scope of cooperations and joint projects to scrutinise innovative networked applications and systems. Currently the Fraunhofer IIS tests a connected camera technique for safety applications like the ones used by fire-fighters or emergency physicians.
