MediaTek is predicted to grow revenue by 27 percent and Nvidia by 35 percent year-on-year and each jump two places in the ranking compared with 2015. Meanwhile pure-play foundry Globalfoundries Inc. is ranked at 18 which corresponds to a drop of three places compared with 2015 based on the prediction that its sales will drop by 11 percent annually.

Nvidia is reporting strong demand for its graphics processor devices (GPUs) and Tegra processors with its year-over-year sales in its latest quarter (ended October 30, 2016) up 63 percent for gaming, up 193 percent for data center, and up 61 percent for automotive applications. Although MediaTek plays in the smartphone market where unit volume sales are expected to increase by only 4 percent in 2016, it’s involvement fast-growing China-based smartphone suppliers such as Oppo and Vivo is forecast to help drive its 2016 increase.

Forecast of top 20 semiconductor vendors in 2016, including foundries, fabless and Apple.

At the top of the ranking Intel will stretch out its lead over second-placed Samsung this is mainly because of Intel’s series of acquisitions boosting its revenues while Samsung as a major memory supplier is hit by declining average selling prices in that sector as are Micron and SK Hynix.

The top-20 ranking includes three pure-play foundries (TSMC, GlobalFoundries, and UMC) and five fabless companies. If the three pure-play foundries were excluded from the top-20 ranking, U.S.-based fabless supplier AMD ($4,238 million), China-based fabless supplier HiSilicon ($3,762 million), and Japan-based IDM Sharp ($3,706 million), would have been ranked in the 18th, 19th, and 20th positions, respectively.  In August 2016, China-based contract assembler Foxconn bought a 66 percent controlling interest in Sharp for $3.8 billion.

Next: Apple

The biggest upward move in the ranking is forecast to be made by Apple, which is expected to jump up three positions in the 2016 ranking as compared to 2015.  However, Apple is an anomaly in the top-20 as it designs and uses its processors only in its own products. IC Insights estimates that Apple’s custom ARM-based SoC processors will have a “sales value” of $6.5 billion in 2016.
