The investment is expected to create an additional 150 to 200 jobs during 2019 and 2020 adding to the 1,000 workers it already employs in Finland. The fab is intended to help meet demand for MEMS in the automotive industry and in various health and industrial applications, the company said. The MEMS sensors manufactured by Murata in Finland at present are used in applications such as car safety systems and pacemakers.

Murata entered MEMS manufacturing there with its acquisition of VTI Technologies Oy in 2012 (see Murata to buy MEMS firm for $260 million).

Murata Elecronics Oy is the only Murata factory which manufactures MEMS sensors outside of Japan. The Vantaa site in Finland also hosts R&D space and one of the biggest clean room facilities in the country.
