Samsung wants quarter of foundry market

The company plans to do this by adding “aggressively” adding clients,  E.S. Jung, executive vice president and head of the Samsung foundry division, told Reuters on Monday.

The company has already enjoyed some success in making chips for Apple, thereby taking some business from leading foundry TSMC. More success is expected next year. Samsung also showed its intent when it split its foundry business off from the main semiconductor business earlier this year (see Report: Samsung foundry split “likely”).

“We want to become a strong number two player in the market,” Reuters quoted Jung as saying.

TSMC is the number one foundry with more than 50 percent of the market followed by Globalfoundries with 9.6 percent and UMC with 8.1 percent, according to IHS-Markit. HIS-Markit estimates Samsung’s market at just share as being just behind UMC’s at 7.9 percent.

Samsung and TSMC are in a race to introduce extreme ultraviolet lithography and progress to 7nm manufacturing production in 2H18.
