Until now, the light-absorbing hole-supplier layer typically designed in UVC LEDs significantly degraded current-voltage performance, increasing heat generation and adversely affecting device lifetimes.
Bolb Inc.’s new LEDs built using the UVC-transparent hole-supplying layer do not suffer voltage tradeoff and allows the packaged LEDs to simultaneously achieve 12.2% EQE and 9.5% wall-plug efficiency (WPE).
This means that a single 0.5x0.25mm LED driven at a 20mA forward current will deliver 10 to 11mW of UVC power at an optimized disinfection wavelength of 265 to 275nm, while maintaining a 5.8V forward voltage.
This is a single chip performance 3 to 5 times that of competitors’ offerings at similar wavelengths, claims the company.
