Valeo and Ichikoh to co-develop electronic mirrors

Rather than compete, the two companies announced they would co-develop the electronic mirrors, based on external cameras and interior displays.

“We judged that we can make up for each other in terms of technologies. Going forward, we will develop electronic mirrors only through joint development”, reportedly said Valeo Japan Co Ltd.

In the joint development, Valeo is in charge of electronic systems including cameras and displays while Ichikoh is mostly responsible for the development of exterior components, such as the side-view cameras exposed to wind pressure, vibration and weather conditions.

Back in 2000, Valeo invested in Ichikoh in 2000, then the two companies co-developed an automotive head lamp. Their cooperation has now been extended to electronic mirrors which seem to have a promising future.

Last June, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) revised Regulation No.46 (on rear-view mirrors), allowing the use of electronic mirrors in Europe, Japan.
