ChipDNA is Maxim’s implementation of a PUF. A PUF is a function – a relation between some input parameters and an output value – derived from some variable properties of a micro circuit. Circuits have unpredictable and uncontrolled physical properties, such as the threshold voltage of a transistor, or delays of the stages of a ring oscillator. Even when they have the same logical design, all circuits are different when it comes to atoms because of natural, fundamentally random variations of the manufacturing process.
