Three years after Microsoft funded the OpenAI computing cluster that produced ChatGPT, another startup is aiming to build an even larger cluster.

Inflection AI has raised $1.3bn (€1.2bn) from investors that include Microsoft and Nvidia to build an AI supercomputer cluster using 22,000 of the latest Nvidia GPU chips.

The latest round of funding led by Microsoft, founder Reid Hoffman, Bill Gates, Eric Schmidt of Google and new investor Nvidia. This brings the total raised by the company to $1.525bn.

Inflection AI is working with GPU cloud specialist CoreWeave on the cluster of H100 Tensor Core GPUs. This provides 22 exaFLOPS of performance in the 16-bit precision mode, and even more if lower precision is used, and would be the world’s second most powerful supercomputer.

The rollout of the AI supercomputer cluster is actively under way with 3500 GPUs so far with the performance rated in the recent MLPerf benchmark.

However this is a dedicated GPU cluster in the cloud that will be used to boost the performance of Inflection’s large language model called Inflection 1, which the company says outperforms GPT-3.5 used for ChatGPT, LLaMA for Bard, Chinchilla, and PaLM-540B on a wide range of benchmarks. This powers a generative AI framework called Pi (for personal ai) which was launched back in May.

“Personal AI is going to be the most transformational tool of our lifetimes. This is truly an inflection point. We’re excited to collaborate with NVIDIA, Microsoft, and CoreWeave as well as Eric, Bill and many others to bring this vision to life,” said Mustafa Suleyman, CEO and co-founder of Inflection AI.

“A powerful benefit of the AI revolution is the ability to use natural, conversational language to interact with supercomputers to simplify aspects of our everyday lives,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia. “The world-class team at Inflection AI is helping to lead this groundbreaking work, deploying Nvidia AI technology to develop, train and deploy massive generative AI models that enable amazing personal digital assistants.”

“We’re proud to support Inflection AI as they pursue their vision for more trusted and personal AI experiences,” said Kevin Scott, CTO and EVP AI, Microsoft. “It is an exciting time, and ambitious AI companies like Inflection AI are pioneering the industry with transformative products that are accessible, easy to use, and show the many possibilities of AI.”

“We are very excited to partner with Inflection AI, a pioneering AI company with an outstanding team, to bring the power of supercomputing to cutting edge consumer products,” said Michael Intrator, CEO of CoreWeave.
