£2m for Q5D to scale up wiring harness robotics
Q5D in the UK has raised an additional £2m to scale up production of its automotive wiring harness robotic assembly system
The loan from Innovate UK will be used to set up an engineering support team and achieve compliance certifications and quality standards as well as scaling production. This follows £2m of venture funding in December. It has shipped its CY10W robotic wire harness manufacturing platform to the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry and achieved CE marking.
“Q5D is already collaborating with some fo the largest manufacturing companies, supplying pilot lines and undertaking key projects,” said the company, “THe next phase is to prepare our business and products for full-scale production.”
Producing wiring harnesses is a highly manual process with a global market worth $200bn. The robotic system developed by Q5D in Portishead, near Bristol, avoids the need to ship wiring harnesses between sites as the tool can assemble the harness locally as part of the production line. This also allows for more customisation and lighter, more cost effective sub-assemblies.
