4-channel LED driver reduces PCB area and design effort

The introduction of LED lights for automotive applications is making great strides in terms of energy savings and design flexibility. At the same time, the number of lights and brightness levels is increasing significantly. In order to reduce costs and shorten development time, vehicle manufacturers are demanding easier to implement electrical circuits for rear and license plate lights.

Rohm developed the LED drivers of the BD183x7EFV-M series with special heat dissipation and individual control options for LEDs with different specifications. The three- and two-stage ICs operate with operating voltages between 5.5 V and 20 V and feature a high output current of 150 mA/channel. The accuracy of the LED drive is specified with ±5 %. Housed in the compact HTSSOP-B16 package with dimensions of 5.00 mm x 6.40 mm 1.0 mm, the LED driver ICs operate in the temperature range from -40 °C to +125 °C. The special heat dissipation simplifies thermal design and reduces the design effort. It also reduces the required board area. A further advantage is the individual or collective control of LEDs in case of failure. The BD183x7EFV-M series thus complies with the license plate illumination standards applicable to motorcycles. An independent dimming function enables greater design diversity through sequential lighting. There are also functions to protect the LED driver and peripheral circuits.

Open input or short-circuit detection for vehicle lights, anomaly detection for each channel, and other protection functions prevent damage to the circuit, LED driver, and peripherals.
