Bosch expects a large market for entry-level hybridization, and therefore offers not only the 48-volt battery but also other drive components. In 2025, the company estimates that around 15 million new vehicles will be 48-volt hybrids.

Car manufacturers are striving to reduce CO2 emissions and thus the fuel consumption of cars. Bosch has designed the new 48-volt battery for this purpose. According to Bosch, it is already in discussions with more than a dozen customers and has won a significant number of serial projects.

The concept can help to reduce CO2 emissions from vehicles at a comparatively low cost. This is also due to product design. The battery does not require active cooling and is housed in a plastic housing instead of metal. Both save costs. Installation in the plastic cover is a real challenge, as the lithium cells swell up when the battery is charged and over its service life. So the packaging has to withstand a lot of wear and tear. Bosch engineers have rearranged the cells of the 48-volt battery so that a plastic housing can withstand the pressure.
