Bosch expects a large market for entry-level hybridization, and therefore offers not only the 48V battery but also other drive components. In 2025, the company estimates that around 15 million new vehicles will be 48V hybrids.

Car manufacturers are striving to reduce CO2 emissions and thus the fuel consumption of cars. Bosch has designed the new 48-volt battery for this purpose. According to Bosch, it is already in discussions with more than a dozen customers and has won a significant number of serial projects.

The battery does not require active cooling and is housed in a plastic housing instead of metal. Both save costs. Installation in the plastic cover is a real challenge, as the lithium cells swell up when the battery is charged and over its service life. So the packaging has to withstand a lot of wear and tear. Bosch engineers have rearranged the cells of the 48V battery so that a plastic housing can withstand the pressure.
