The higher resolution, about 3 to 4 times that of today’s VR systems, guarantees a very smooth image without the annoying screen door effect. The company combines it with its patented Pantile optics (under 30mm thick) which allows much smaller and thinner mobile VR systems, less than half the size of commercial VR headsets such as Oculus Rift, HTC Vive or Sony PlayStation VR. The Lightning OLED microdisplay was named a CES 2017 Innovation Awards Honoree, and since then has been in demand from VR headset manufacturers.

Later, the company formed a joint venture with the Lenovo Capital and Incubator Group (LCIG). Dubbed Lenovo New Vision, the new subsidiary of LCIG is to focus on enterprise AR smart headsets. Kopin will provide a small capital investment, industrial design solutions, and know-how to use some of its key components to Lenovo New Vision, including the micro-displays, optics, software and Whisper Voice Chip.

Prior to the 2k x 2k display release, the US-based microdisplay manufacturer had also entered into a strategic relationship with China-based Goertek Inc., a manufacturing and integration services provider for large companies such as Samsung, Sony, Microsoft, Huawei and Xiaomi. Kopin sold for US $23,851,750 of common stock to Goertek, representing just under 10% of Kopin’s total outstanding shares of common stock. The two companies will jointly develop and commercialize a range of technologies and wearable products.
