5G and eSIM/iSIM technologies are increasingly important for the roll out of the Internet of Things (IoT) says a new report by Omdia.
This comes as a major iSIM provider is extending its technology into modules and Renesas looks to boost its cellular offerings by acquiring French chip designer Sequans.
Enterprises are deploying, or are in the process of rolling out, IoT solutions and that 95% of respondents expect to see measurable benefits from IoT within two years of deployment says the latest Omdia Internet of Things (IoT) Enterprise Survey
The survey found that while LTE (4G) remains a popular connectivity bearer, over 70% of enterprises are planning to use 5G connectivity. Meanwhile, eSIM/iSIM technology have or will be adopted by nearly 90% of enterprises over the next two years. This technology will enable enterprises to better manage costs and allow them to renegotiate future connectivity tariffs.

“While some tech giants have scaled back their IoT efforts, enterprises are embracing IoT and seeing remarkable results,” said John Canali, IoT Principal Analyst, Omdia and author of the report. “In fact, enterprises are very forward looking in incorporating new technologies like 5G, fixed wireless access (FWA), and eSIM/iSIM technology.”
Enterprises are increasingly reliant on vendors and partners, given that deploying IoT solutions is often complex and requires a diverse array of skills to succeed. Many enterprises cited internally obtaining the relevant resources and skills as a major hurdle.
“Our survey suggests that there are a multitude of opportunities ranging from hardware, software, connectivity, services. However, security remains at the forefront of enterprise concerns and vendors must be able to not only offer secure products and services but also be able to effectively integrate into broader solutions. Vendors that fail to deliver secure solutions will find themselves locked out of this growing market,” added Andrew Brown, IoT Practice Lead at Omdia.
This comes as Soracom expands its partnership to support the commercial deployment of next-generation iSIM technology
The company has previously showed a Proof of Concept with Sony Semiconductor Israel and authentication specialist Kigen. This has now been expanded to include compatible modules from Quectel and Murata.
The standard integrates communication modules, SIM, eSIM and iSIM functions into a single System-on-Chip (SoC) device and offers a hardware-secured area within the chip for data integrity.

“We are pleased to make iSIM technology available commercially and appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with global technology leaders to help accelerate this development,” said Ken Tamagawa, CEO and Co-founder for Soracom. “iSIM technology matches perfectly with Soracom’s Subscription Containers feature, which lets users download new profiles over the air as needed. iSIM represents the future of SIM technology, and this collaboration puts our customers at the leading edge of IoT development.”
“iSIM technology is a game changer for anyone who wants to secure data originating from connected devices whether it’s for delivering unique customer experiences or for AI solutions,” said Vincent Korstanje, CEO of Kigen. “The commercial availability of iSIM on Soracom’s network is the result of extensive collaborative testing of the Kigen iSIM OS using the market-leading modules and chipsets.”
