700V buck regulator for smart home and industrial control

Renesas Electronics has launched a 700V buck regulator family for smart home, industrial control and power meter designs.

The RAA2230XX family regulates AC line voltage down to 3.3V to monitor a microcontroller, sensor and other digital chips, avoiding the need for a second-stage low dropout regulator (LDO), saving BOM cost and board space. The regulator supports both non-isolated buck and isolated flyback topologies, allowing customers to develop multiple types of AC input power supplies.

The devices consume 10mW to 30mW when idle, helping system designers meet ever-tightening standby power regulations. The devices use a proprietary switching algorithm which minimizes electromagnetic interference (EMI) and eliminates audible noise, such as humming.

Renesas has used the RAA2230XX devices with analogue, power, timing devices and embedded processing to simplify the design process and significantly reducing design risk for customers in a wide variety of applications. For example the Household Smoke Detector has a turnkey architecture for a residential smoke alarm, suitable for smart industrial control terminals.

The 700V RAA2230XX buck regulators are available now in TSOT23-5, SOIC-8 and SOIC-7 package options, delivering pin-to-pin compatibility with other industry devices for easy replacement and with 2W, 4W and 8W versions. Renesas also offers evaluation boards for different package and output combinations.
