The additional wavelength is said to improve image contrast, making it easier to read patterns from recorded images. Because camera sensors have a higher sensitivity at 810nm, for the same optical output, the SFH 4703AS extends the range of these camera systems as compared to 850nm.

Part of the Oslon product family, the SFH 4703AS outputs 1 watt of optical power at 1 amp. Its +-45° beam angle allows for a broad illumination, with a resulting radiant intensity of 630 milliwatts per steradian (mW/sr) at 1A. The device is only 3.85×3.85×2.29mm, including the lens.
