The ‘floatovoltaic’ solar panels could be 11 percent more efficient than solar panels placed on land as a result of the cooling from the water underneath, and the panels also reduce evaporatoin. The 1MW testbed covers 1 hectare and the energy generated will be fed into the national energy grid, providing electricity for up to 250 households.

The testbed has been installed on the Tengeh Reservoir in west Singapore with technology from multiple providers to study the performance and cost-effectiveness of floating solar platforms. ABB supplied 100 kW of its TRIO-50 solar inverters to Phoenix Solar, one of several system integrators for the project. ABB’s low-voltage molded case and miniature circuit breakers also protect the electrical circuits on the water.
