
ABB to automate Morrow battery plant
Morrow Batteries and ABB have signed a letter of intent for support on automation, electrification, and digitization of Morrow’s planned facilities in southern Norway. The two companies also intend to collaborate on a common approach to selling highly integrated battery products and energy storage systems.
“Our mission is to accelerate the green energy transition by developing and manufacturing cost effective and sustainable batteries. In southern Norway we are building world-leading battery cell capabilities, and together with ABB we look forward to exploring the possibilities where we can deliver world class battery solutions,” said Terje Andersen, CEO of Morrow Batteries.
“Morrow Batteries’ ambitious plans for large-scale, cutting edge R&D and manufacturing is crucial for the energy transition, increased sustainability and reindustrialization of Norway,” said Per Erik Holsten, country managing director of ABB in Norway and head of Energy Industries for Northern Europe.

The ABB site at Skien, Norway, ABB has R&D and manufacturing of electrical and power equipment for electrification of society and the global renewables market, supporting the energy transition and a sustainable future. Not far from there, Morrow is building its 42 GWh battery cell factory. Recently Morrow formalized the partnership with Arendal Municipality, ensuring approximately 940 000 square meters land with easily accessible infrastructure.
Later this year Morrow will start the construction of its Battery Innovation Centre and the Pilot factory and in 2023 its first giga-factory module. The facilities will be fully automated and digitized and one of few in Europe that can manage today’s proven state-of-the-art battery technology as well as the future technology of battery cell development and manufacturing.
“ABB will be an important partner to ensure world class automatization and digitalization of our facilities and is capable to manage the manufacturing process from the incoming of materials to the output of battery cells-products,” said Andersen.
