The new range has been developed for cost-sensitive connected devices that require Bluetooth 5.0, ZigBee 3.0, or OpenThread support. The devices have a link budget from 100dB in Bluetooth 5.0 mode up to 104dB in 802.15.4 mode.

The STM32WB50 MCUs are based around an Arm Cortex-M4 for user-application software and a Cortex-M0+ to run the radio subsystem including radio stack and security. It is intended for use case that require application isolation for security reasons or real-time application constraints. It features both strong security and affordability. AES-256 and other basic security features ensure application robustness. The device has 1MByte Flash, 128Kbyte RAM and allows OTA updates for the radio stack. The STM32WB50 line also offers several power-saving modes for energy-saving applications. It also integrates balun circuitry to reduce BOM cost and simplify layout. The package allows a very simple PCB with a maximum of two layers.

The MCUs also use the STM32Cube ecosystem, with Bluetooth 5.0, BLE Mesh, ZigBee 3.0, or OpenThread certified stacks, distributed free of charge in the STM32CubeWB MCU Package. STM32Cube also provides a toolset that includes STM32CubeMonRF for radio performance evaluation and the STM32CubeProg programmer that provides features including for secure programming of the RF stacks.
