AI-driven COVID-19 test provides results in 20 seconds

The Virolens system has been developed to provide test results for COVID-19 in 20 seconds. The system was launched today after completing trials at London Heathrow Airport over recent weeks. The Virolens COVID-19 screening device uses microscopic holographic imaging and AI software to detect COVID-19 virus from a non-intrusive saliva swab test. The test does not need to be administered by healthcare professionals.

TT is now the exclusive manufacturing partner for the commercial launch of Virolens, which also uses several TT products. Working with iAbra and the global supply chain, TT has taken the product from concept to production in only 14 weeks.

Virolens will be manufactured at TT’s Hartlepool facility for the launch phase, creating a number of new jobs and opportunities for the site. Initial orders for devices and testing cartridges will be delivered to potential launch customers in September and October. These orders total around £2 million, and further expressions of interest could take sales to £280 million in the next year.

Virolens could be a large step forward in dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, by providing safe access to locations. The programme also has the potential to deliver a large change in TT’s organic growth, assuming the launch is successful.
