AI prompts Merck to buy chip inspection firm UnitySC

Merck Group (Darmstadt, Germany) has said it plans to buy metrology and chip inspection equipment supplier Unity-SC (Grenoble, France) for €155 million plus further potential, milestone-based payments.
Unity-SC employs approximately 160 people, of whom 70 work in R&D.
“The acquisition of Unity-SC complements our science- and technology-driven portfolio for the semiconductor industry. It strengthens our ability to benefit from the growth opportunities of artificial intelligence as an integrated solutions provider for our customers in developing next-generation chips,” said Belén Garijo, CEO and chairman of Merck.
Chiplets and advanced packaging
Unity-SC’s metrology tools allow the improvement of the quality, yield, and manufacturing costs of chips used in AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and high-bandwidth memory (HBM), Merck said.
Unity-SC also specializes in the testing of components produced using advanced packaging, heterogeneous integration using chiplets.
“We are convinced that 3D metrology tools will further advance the semiconductor industry. Adding metrology to our portfolio allows us to provide more materials and more solutions that effectively solve our customers challenges in developing ever faster, more powerful, and more efficient chips,” said Kai Beckmann, CEO of Merck Electronics.
The intended acquisition is subject to consultation with the French workforce to and to regulatory approval and other closing conditions. The deal is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
