With the aid of artificial intelligence, the system, jointly developed with JapanTaxi, KDDI and Accenture, takes various factors such as weather and events into consideration. It provides information on the number of taxis occupied and the number of taxis likely to be needed in the vicinity. In addition to information on how many taxis are currently active and available on the road, demographic forecasts and external factors such as availability of public transport, as well as major events are also taken into account in the forecast. The data are updated every 30 minutes.

The AI “knows” where and when
the demand for a cab ride is rising

This information enables taxi drivers to know in which neighborhoods and at which times the demand is rising. If they position themselves in the vicinity, they not only reduce the waiting time for passengers. Also the utilization of their taxi is increasing. Initial tests in the Tokyo metropolitan region in February 2018 showed an average turnaround increase of 20.4 percent compared to the usual monthly increase of 9.4 percent overall. If desired, tablet PCs equipped with the software can also navigate the routes on which passengers are expected to be waiting. The accuracy of the forecasts is 94.1 percent.

The test is to be extended to additional taxis later this year. The system also serves as a training model for new taxi drivers and is to be gradually improved.
