AI’s ‘human side’ is focus of new Google initiative

By Rich Pell

The initiative, called PAIR (“People + AI Research”), will focus on the relationship between users and technology, the new applications AI enables, and how to make it broadly inclusive. In addition to publishing research, PAIR will release open source tools for researchers and other experts to use.

According to the announcement on Google’s blog, PAIR’s research will be divided among three different use cases: engineers and researchers, specific domain experts, and everyday users. And rather than view AI just as a technology, PAIR researchers hope to instead approach it as “a material to design with.”

PAIR is initially releasing two open-source visualization tools aimed helping AI engineers understand and analyze machine learning datasets: Facets Overview and Facets Dive. Facets Overview gives users “a sense of the shape of each feature” of their dataset, while Facets Dive lets users interactively explore large numbers of data points at once.

PAIR is also supporting external research. PAIR researchers are currently working with visiting professors who are focusing on education and science in the age of AI.
