Aixtron selects Turin for chip-making equipment factory
Deposition equipment supplier Aixtron SE (Herzogenrath, Germany) has bought a site near Turin, Italy, where it plans to build an equipment production factory.
The company supplies metalo-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) equipment used for the production of VCSELs, microLEDs, SiC and GaN chips for power applications and GaN for RF applications.
The company said it has selected Italy because it expects a significant uptake in European demand for its equipment and as well as meeting Italian demand the Turin site will complement facilities at Herzogenrath, Germany (headquarters, R&D, production) and Cambridge in England (R&D, production).
“Within two to three years, we envision a significant share of Aixtron volume to be shipped from this location. We were able to secure the rare opportunity to purchase an existing production facility at very attractive commercial terms, which provides almost all of the specialized operations and test infrastructure for the manufacturing of our equipment,” said Felix Grawert, CEO, at a press conference held with representatives of the regional Italian government.
The Politecnico University in Turin is known for its research and teaching in semiconductor technology and will a connection that Aixtron will value, the company said.
The company did not disclose how much it will cost to build the factory or what output would be in terms of the number of pieces of equipment per unit time.
