Aledia in France has opened a $200m production line for its 3D nanowire microLED displays for augmented reality (AR).

The Grenoble-based company has raised €600m over the last ten years with Intel and Ikea as investors and has a €100m pilot line for industrialization and start of production in 5000 m² of cleanrooms.

Prototypes of AR smart glasses are targeting commercial launches as early as 2027. The new line at Champagnier uses semiconductor-grade 200mm and 300m silicon wafers to reduce production costs for large-scale production of microLEDs. Aledia CEO Pierre Laboisse says the company is ready and able to support customer demand ramp up to nearly 5,000 wafer starts per week. Tower Semiconductor had previously been making devices.

Aledia’s microdisplay has monolithically grown gallium nitride (GaN) nanowires with red, green and blue microLEDs on the same substrate. The 3D structure allows precise and directive light emission, making Aledia’s displays highly efficient.

Hybrid bonding technology combines the microLED and driver electronics into a package for thinner displays and higher power efficiency for longer battery life.

“Immersive technologies such as AR haven’t reached their full potential as the industry has yet to design screens that are both slick and highly functional,” said Laboisse. “At Aledia, we’ve created a nanowire technology that makes microLED displays thinner, more power efficient and easier to produce for mass adoption. By next CES, OLED and LCOS will already be phased out in favour of microLED technology.”

“Our Champagnier factory is a key milestone for European innovation,” said Laboisse. “We are redefining global standards of display technology with our efficient and high-performing chips, positioning Grenoble as the global centre of microLED production.
