Amazon acquires smart home security startup
According to reports, Blink – which makes connected home security cameras and smart video doorbells – has agreed to be acquired by Amazon. The company’s products are compatible with Amazon’s Echo smart speaker.
Founded in 2014, Blink offers a wireless home security camera that sends motion-activated alerts and HD video to a user’s smartphone for $99. Earlier this week, the company announced a soon-to-be-available video doorbell, which is also priced at $99 for existing customers.
The deal is seen as helping Amazon compete with Google’s Nest, which recently expanded into home security. Announced in September, Nest Labs’ security system comprises an alarm system, a video doorbell, an outdoor security camera, and associated software and services.
For now, says Blink, it will continue to operate under the Amazon umbrella while selling and supporting the same products. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
