“With electric utilities upgrading their analog equipment and modernizing their substations, there is an urgent need for improved communications. With only 9% of North American utility substations connected by fiber optic cable, both companies see an opportunity to bring broadband communications to the market and enable the ‘Smart Substation’,” noted Brian Hoffmann, Vice President and Business Unit Manager for AMETEK Power Instruments.  “AMETEK’s products provide the capability to consolidate all substation data into one data stream utilizing a number of transport means, including fiber, pilot wire, microwave or power line, to move data across the substation network. Amperion’s B-PLC provides utilities with an exciting new technology that interfaces with our products to move high bandwidth data over existing infrastructure that the utilities already own.”

AMETEK and Amperion plan to provide cost-effective solutions with an array of product options that include fiber, power line carrier and Ethernet interfaces. Both companies support TDM and Ethernet IP right out of the box to simplify the migration path for the utility.

Amperion’s B-PLC technology can be used as a complement to fiber, used as a backup option to fiber, or serve as an extension of an existing fiber backbone network.

Nachum Sadan, Chief Executive Officer of Amperion. “There is no reason to wait until fiber is available. A utility can start with a B-PLC and migrate later to fiber or stay with B-PLC.  We are covering all the bases by combining Narrowband PLC, Broadband PLC, Fiber, Sonet TDM and Ethernet IP and, with our combined product offerings, provide the most versatile solution on the market today.”

Amperion’s B-PLC products are used by American Electric Power for protection and control applications as a replacement for aging pilot wire systems and by other utilities that require communications for SCADA, wide-area protection and substation automation applications.
