Amkor, GloFo cut ribbon on Portugal packaging partnership

Chip packaging and test services provider Amkor Technology Inc. and Globalfoundries Inc. have a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled January 16 for Amkor’s Porto, Portugal facility.
The ceremony will mark the formal launch of a previously announced partnership between the two companies and underlining a fully European supply chain for semiconductor wafer production (see Globalfoundries, Amkor partner for European OSAT).
Over the last year Globalfoundries has transferred 50 tools from its Dresden site to Amkor in Porto and first customer products have been qualified on the GF tools, the companies said.
GF is transferring its 300mm ‘bump and sort’ lines from its Dresden site to Amkor’s Porto plant, which is IATF16949 certified, to establish the first at-scale back-end facility in Europe.
Amkor also recently broke ground on a new factory expansion in Porto to deepen its commitment to supporting local supply chains and global customers.
