Amkor opens MEMS packaging line in China
The line will make use of the layout and technology at Amkor’s packaging line in the Philippines, which has produced more than 2.1 billion units of MEMS and sensors since 2011, Amkor said. It is expected to support increased manufacturing of MEMS in China and shipment to Chinese equipment manufacturers. China makes more than a third of the world’s electronic equipment.
The MEMS unit market is on a 13 percent CAGR between 2015 and 2021 and the value of the MEMS market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.9 percent over the same period, according to Yole Developpement (see What comes after MEMS’ golden age?). In addition trends towards sensor fusion are driving a trend towards multi-chip packaging of sensors.
“Our Shanghai expansion allows us to better serve customers in Greater China and internationally,” said John Donaghey, corporate vice president of mainstream products at Amkor, in a statement.
