AMOLED soon taking over LTPS TFT-LCDs in smartphones, says IHS
Unit shipments of AMOLED smartphone panels increased 23 percent to reach 31.7 million units in March 2016, compared to the previous month. While at the start of last year, low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel shipments for smartphones were nearly 2.5 times as high as AMOLED panel shipments, last March, the shipment ratio was down to just 1.3.
Brian Huh, Senior Analyst at IHS Technology see the gap between LTPS TFT-LCD and AMOLED narrowing, as costs decline and more smartphone manufacturers warm to AMOLED’s thinner and lighter form factor, better colour saturation, greater contrast ratio and other differentiating features.
Samsung’s increased use of AMOLED displays in their low-end and mid-range mobile phones, and growing demand from Chinese brands, is primarily driving the current surge in the technology. OPPO, Vivo, Gionee and other Chinese brands have already added AMOLED smartphones in their product lineups, while Huawei, Xiaomi are now considering adopting the technology for upcoming new models.
Apple is also reported to be considering AMOLED displays for its iPhone models in 2017 (until now, the company has adopted LTPS TFT-LCD in its smartphones, helping this technology dominate the smartphone display market).
