Renault’s EV spin off Ampere has signed a collaboration agreement for power electronics with e2-CAD, including an equity deal.

Under the agreement, Ampere acquires 40% of Paris-based E2-CAD to make sure it benefits from the company’s expertise in powertrain electronics.

Power electronics play a major role in the charging speed, range and driving of an electric vehicle and represent an increasingly significant part of the cost of an electric powertrain.

This collaboration is part of Ampere’s desire to master the embedded electronics value chain by working in close partnership with a company expert in this field. It also reflects E2-CAD’s desire to include its company and teams in a long-term project with a first-class partner.

“We have been working with E2-CAD on structuring topics for years, since the launch of Zoe in 2013. The skills of E2-CAD teams in key areas of electric vehicles, especially in the development of electronic boards and low-level software, its agility on our projects have made it one of our preferred partners. This agreement is part of Ampere’s strategy to master the know-how around power electronics, especially in the context of our next major E7A powertrain project. The history between our two companies ensures immediate effectiveness on our major projects,” said Philippe Brunet, SVP Powertrain and EV Engineering at Ampere.

“The management team’s desire to strengthen and sustain E2-CAD’s positioning, along with the many successful projects carried out for Renault, particularly since Zoe, have clearly paved the way for a rapprochement with Ampere. E2-CAD is at the crossroads between the players in the automotive electronics world and is thus perfectly aligned with Ampere’s objectives. It is a great satisfaction for us to make this agreement a reality and thus strengthen our collaboration on these major projects,” said Rémi Castella, President of E2-CAD.

E2-CAD specialises in electronic products and systems development for automotive and equipment manufacturers, with a specialisation in the development of complex software supporting high performance and safety constraints, particularly for the powertrain.
