AMS acquires MAZeT for color, spectral sensing
MAZeT (Jena, Germany), was founded in 1992 as a spin off from Carl Zeiss, and provides color and spectral sensing ICs and related ASICs with a focus on precision engineering for industrial and medical applications. The company has about 80 employees.
MAZeT’s capabilities include IC and filter design as well as hardware and software system development with its Jencolor sensors being used in airplane interior lighting, agricultural sensors, and medical skin lesion analysis.
The MAZeT move follows numerous similar acquisitions including those of CMOSIS for €220 million in November 2015, Cambridge CMOS Sensors and the environmental sensor business of NXP.
“We want to become the one-stop shop for sensors and MAZeT aids us in this by expanding our leadership in optical sensors,” said Thomas Riener, executive vice president and general manager of emerging sensor solutions at AMS. “The acquisition is complementary to what we already have as MAZeT is focused on high-end color and spectral sensing. They will help drive color and spectral sensing growth opportunities in industrial, automotive and medical applications.”
Rainer added that MAZeT – although highly skilled in optical filtering and sensing – was essentially a fabless design house and that there is scope to use the manufacturing capabilities of AMS as well as the operational and global sales capability to increase the benefits of the deal.
