The acquisition includes a number of products implemented in CMOS that measure several variables such as as relative humidity, pressure and temperature in one sensor device. There is also a team of 40 people based in Eindhoven, for whom AMS recently opened a design center, together with over 100 relevant patents.

The environmental sensors are suitable for deployment in smartphones, wearable equipment, smart homes, industrial, medical and automotive markets.

"The acquisition of NXP’s CMOS sensor business expands our existing environmental sensor technologies and is a synergistic addition to our chemical sensor capabilities and smart lighting solutions. This portfolio makes ams the one-stop shop for environmental sensors," said Thomas Riener, executive vice president for marketing and strategy at AMS, in a statement.

Temperature and relative humidity sensor solutions are available for sampling now and will be in mass production early in 2016.
