According to media reports, ams surprisingly submitted a purchase offer for the distressed LED manufacturer Osram Licht on Monday. This is said to be almost 10 percent higher than the current takeover bid by the financial investors Bain Capital and Carlyle. Strategically, the offer would have fitted into ams’ field of activity – the chip manufacturer has been diversifying its activities for some time. An interesting field could be Osram’s automotive activites, several media speculated.
But now ams has withdrawn from the process before it has really started. Yes, according to a press release by ams, talks had been held with Osram Licht about a possible transaction. As part of its technology-oriented strategy, ams is constantly examining potential opportunities for further development of the company. But it was merely a “provisional, non-binding expression of interest”. After evaluating the latest developments, ams does not see a sufficient basis for a continuation of the talks. “For ams, such potential opportunities must be strategically compelling and demonstrably value-enhancing in order for us to consider pursuing an M&A transaction,” it says.
