APEC 2019 saw TDK and Murata claiming the smallest converters for point of load and buck regulators, claims that are certain to be challenged and overtaken in the coming months. This is being driven by the need to fit more computing resource with more current requirements into existing racks. The same capabilities are also being applied to the aerospace industry.

Wide bandbap technologies such as gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC) have emerged as mainstream devices, and the exposition was showing the latest 48V devices and the eco-system that provides higher efficiencies and power densities.

The conference and exposition makes it clear that silicon for power still evolving and has plenty of headroom. Engineers are producing new architectures and new designs to improve the efficiency and performance of power systems

But they are also pushing the boundaries with new system-on-chip (SoC) designs and design tools. Power control is at the heart of a new ultra low power power management device, initially for hearing aids and wearables, that will control SoC devices for the battery-based wireless nodes in the Internet of Things.

And power systems can be evaluated without building physical prototypes, allowing innovative architectures and designs to be tested more quickly, driving innovation in the industry even faster.

APEC 2020 will be held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Centre in New Orleans from March 15-19, 2020.
