Apple art-based AR walks push ‘creativity’s outer limits’
Using smartphones and headphones, users can experience augmented reality-based interactive virtual art works placed in the real world as they walk through cities including San Francisco, New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Apple commissioned the art with the New York-based New Museum, creating works by seven poets and performers including Nick Cave, Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg, Cao Fei, John Giorno, Carsten Höller, and Pipilotti Rist.
Using AR, the artists have reimagined or invented new ways to express core themes of their art practice. Users, says Apple, will “journey through an immersive world filled with sights and sounds.”
“If there’s a through line in the seven artists that collaborated with the New Museum and Today at Apple to create [AR]T Walk,” says the company, “it’s a shared desire to create not just pieces of art, but entire worlds.”
The works include clay animation shorts, midair speech balloons, fantastical displays, and words from a poem that float on a pathway.
Lisa Phillips, Toby Devan Lewis director for the New Museum says, “The New Museum has always led at the intersection of art and tech and we could not have asked for a better partner in Apple to support the fantastic visions of these pioneering artists. Augmented reality is a medium ripe for dynamic and visual storytelling that can extend an artist’s practice beyond the studio or the gallery and into the urban fabric.”
The walks are about 1.5 miles and last for about two hours. Each tour begins at an Apple Store location and features the same art work.
