Apple buys wireless charging company
PowerbyProxi was spun out of the University of Auckland in 2007 and has used a mix of technology licensing in consumer electronics and direct sales elsewhere to take its technology to market. The company raised $4.0 million in 2013 in a Series C led by Samsung Ventures.
PowerByProxi has an extensive intellectual property and since its formation by CEO Fady Mishriki has made contributions to the development of the Wireless Power Consortium’s future Qi wireless charging standard through advances in Resonant technology.
Amongst the mobile phone developer community Apple has been a relatively slow adopter of wireless charging. Samsung in contrast was a relative early adopter and may well have used PowerByProxi technology after buying into the company in 2013.
Apple joined the Wireless Power Consortium earlier in February 2017. PowerByProxi is still listed as a independent company and regular member of the consortium
