Apple cancels wireless charging project

The project aimed to develop a charging system based around the Qi wireless standard that can charge Apple earphones, smartwatches and phones at the same time. Qi is an open standard from the Wireles Power Consortium and so there are wireless chargers from third party charger developers.

“After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project,” said Dan Riccion senior vice president of hardware engineering at Apple. “We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward.”

The technology had been mentioned on the latest Airpod2 earphones just a few weeks ago.
