Apple confirms switch to ARM-based processors for Mac computers
The first ARM-based Macs are expected to ship by the end of 2020 and the transition will complete within about two years. Nonetheless Apple said it has Intel-based Mac computers in development and that it will support Intel-based Macs with its macOS for years to come.
Apple said the transition will also establish a common architecture across all Apple products, making it easier for developers to write and optimize their apps for the entire ecosystem.
Developers are being given early support with the Universal App Quick Start Program, which provides access to documentation, forums support, beta versions of macOS Big Sur and Xcode 12, and the limited use of a Developer Transition Kit (DTK), a Mac development system based on Apple’s A12Z Bionic System on a Chip (SoC).
Developers can apply to the program at developer.apple.com at a cost of $500.
