Apple self-driving car a reality, says report
Code-named Project Titan, Apple’s self-driving car project is further along than suspected, says the paper. Its report was based on documents that showed that Apple is looking for secure locations near San Francisco in which to test autonomous vehicles.
According to the report, Apple engineers recently met with officials of GoMentum Station – a 2,100-acre automated vehicle testing facility at the former Concord Naval Weapons Station – to inquire about possible space availability. The site offers an environment that simulates real-world roadway conditions – including railroad crossings, tunnels and parking lots – as well as being a highly secure location guarded by the U.S. military.
The facility will accommodate up to five automakers and 15 other companies to test technologies like self-driving vehicles, interconnected vehicles and smart city infrastructure. Automakers Honda and Mercedes-Benz have been listed as two companies that have used the site.
Officials at Apple have previously met with automakers, hired automotive engineers, and even referred to the car as "the ultimate mobile device," fueling the speculation that the company was working on a self-driving car. This report is the first documented evidence that supports the rumor. Apple thus far has declined to comment on the report.
