The AR2520HS captures 4K-resolution video at 30 frames-per-second and 1080p images at 120 frames per second allowing quality slow motion display. The product comes in a 0.5-inch optical format to increase light capture area by 88 percent compared with 1/3-inch mobile image sensors. Data is output in either 8 lane MIPI format or 12 lane HiSPi, which stands for High-Speed Pixel Interfaces. The design is compatible with existing 18 megapixel lens designs.
The market for image sensors in the mobile device segment was $4.9 billion in 2012, and is forecast to grow to $8.7 billion in 2017, according to market research firm IHS.
"Aptina, with this ultra-high-performance sensor, is delivering the full camera experience into mobile phones and tablets," said Sandor Barna, CTO of Aptina, in a statement.
Samples of the AR2520HS will be available 2Q14, Aptina said.
