Arctic Semi, NXP teams for universal 5G small cell platform

Arctic Semiconductor, formerly SiTune, has teamed up with Compal Electronics and NXP to launch what it says is the first universal 5G small cell platform.

Compal is one of the world’s largest ODM white label manufacturers and will use the Artic IceWings’ design integrated with NXP’s Semiconductor’s Layerscape Access LA12xxx programmable baseband processor.

The small cell, launched at Mobile World Congress (MWC) this week in Barcelona, can operate at any 5G FR1 frequency bands from 600MHz to 7.2GHz using a 4×4 MIMO antenna to provide gigabit data speeds. This allows global customers can use the universal platform to produce cost-optimized, low-power 5G small cells and O-RAN Radio Units for a wide range of applications including all-in-one or distributed networks in public or private bands, an obvious key point for an ODM.

The Layerscape multicore ARM chip is coupled with a new LA12xx software defined radio to support high throughput transmission and reception with Digital Pre-Distortion. IceWing provides 4 transmit and 4 receive paths via a glue-less interface directly to NXP’s LA12xx baseband processor.
