Mistbase was founded in 2015 and has developed a Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) physical layer implementation. Michal Stala, co-founder and CEO of Mistbase previously worked for ST-Ericsson and on R&D for Ericsson prior to that.

NextG-Com, founded in 2008, has developed a layer two and layer three software stack for NB-IoT. Both teams are experienced in cellular standards and IP development and were already working together to provide integrated solutions prior to acquisition by ARM.

NB-IoT is a standard agreed by the 3GPP organization as an amendment to the LTE cellular communications standard in 2016 and it is likely to be widely adopted as a cost-efficient adoption by mobile phone service operators.

Paul Williamson, general manager of wireless business at ARM said that his company is working on Cordio-N radios to meet NB-IoT and that these will combine with the hardware and software IP from Mistbase and NextG-Com and help create complete NB-IoT chip solutions from application software to antenna.

IHS Markit forecasts that NB-IoT will be the fastest growing low-power wide area network and that it will go from 1 million connections in 2017 to more than 141 million connections in 2021.
