ASML names Marco Pieters as new Chief Technology Officer
ASML Holding NV has appointed Marco Pieters as its new Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO), taking the helm of the company’s semiconductor innovation strategy. With more than 25 years at ASML, Pieters will report to President and CEO Christophe Fouquet and is set to join the company’s Board of Management following the April 2026 Annual General Meeting (AGM).
This leadership change is significant as ASML’s technology roadmap directly impacts the global semiconductor equipment landscape — from lithography innovations to advanced node manufacturing. The appointment signals ASML’s continued focus on long-term R&D stability amid surging demand for EUV and high-NA systems.
Veteran insider to lead ASML’s technology roadmap
Pieters steps into the CTO role immediately, bringing extensive experience from his most recent position as Executive Vice President for ASML’s Applications product area. His background gives him a deep understanding of the company’s complex technology stack, which is at the heart of the semiconductor industry’s progress toward smaller, faster, and more power-efficient chips.
“Technology lies at the heart of ASML and our engineering talent around the world holds the key to our future success,” said CEO Christophe Fouquet. “As part of our robust succession planning process, I am proud to name Marco, a long-standing ASML leader, as CTO. After working alongside him for many years, Marco has my full support in driving forward our technology roadmap in service of our customers. I look forward to our continued collaboration.”
Pieters’ appointment continues ASML’s tradition of promoting internal talent with deep technical expertise. His leadership will likely focus on strengthening R&D initiatives and maintaining ASML’s edge in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography — areas that are critical to chipmakers worldwide.
Leadership continuity at the top
Alongside Pieters’ appointment, ASML’s Supervisory Board announced its intention to reappoint key members of the company’s leadership team at the 2026 AGM. Chief Financial Officer Roger Dassen will serve another four-year term, and Chief Operations Officer Frédéric Schneider-Maunoury will continue for two more years.
“As ASML continues to successfully pursue its strategy to innovate and serve customers around the world, the Supervisory Board is grateful to secure the continued leadership of Roger and Frédéric as part of the ASML Board of Management,” said Supervisory Board Chairman Nils Andersen. “The experience of both leaders at ASML and other companies will be essential in supporting ASML’s long-term goals and managing the interests of employees, shareholders and other stakeholders in the coming years.”
Once Pieters officially joins the Board of Management in 2026, it will expand from five to six members — a move that underscores ASML’s commitment to sustained technological innovation and strong governance as it continues to shape the future of semiconductor manufacturing.
