Audi, Porsche jointly develop electric sports car architecture
For the development of the common architecture, Audi expects to allocate a low single-digit billion euro amount by 2025, explained Audi CEO Rupert Stadler in an interview with Stuttgarter Zeitung and Stuttgarter Nachrichten. “If everyone of us were developing independently, 30 percent higher costs would be incurred,” commented Porsche CEO Oliver Blume. The two VW subsidiaries intend to jointly develop the vehicle architecture – undercarriage, battery packs, electric motors, electronics and software. Previously, within the Volkswagen group, one Group brand had developed strategic components as the system leader for all sister companies – for example, Audi had developed an engine that is also installed in the Porsche Cayenne and the VW Touareg.
According to the newspapers, more than 800 developers are involved in the platform: “We have launched two project houses. One of them is located at Audi’s headquarters in Ingolstadt,” said Blume. The second is in Weissach near Stuttgart, where Porsche has its development center.
The carmakers want to bring several models and vehicle generations based on this joint architecture to the road by 2021. “Audi will produce two limousines in Neckarsulm,”says Stadler. “Two more SUV models will be produced in Ingolstadt.” Blume can imagine Leipzig as the production site for the first Porsche model to use the joint electrical kit.
