It also means that Audience Inc. (Mountain View, Calif.) and InvenSense Inc. (San Jose, Calif.) will likely go head-to-head as they define a new context-awareness platform product and market.
Audience – best known as a provider of audio and noise suppression processors for Android equipment – is buying Sensor Platforms for $41 million to help it expand into sound-plus-motion context awareness. Audience recently began selling its own MQ100 motion processor, using its audio processor architecture.
InvenSense – best known as a provider of inertial MEMS sensor combinations, but which is also in the MEMS microphone business – is picking up Movea SA and Trusted Positioning Inc. for $81 million. Again the goal is to great context-awareness platforms based on the mix of audio, movement and software.
Sensor Platforms was founded in 2004 and developed the FreeMotion Library of software for sensor fusion. In April 2014 it announced the Open Sensor Platform (OSP) for the ARM processor architecture aimed at sensor hubs in smartphones, wearables and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices.
Movea, founded in 2007, has developed sensor-hub software and firmware that gathers data from an accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer and pressure sensor.
