The 32bit sector will account for 77 percent with 16bit MCUs accounting for 18 percent and 8bit MCU sales being worth 6 percent the market researcher said. The market is expected to enjoy a strong couple of years with annual increases of 14 percent in 2020 and 16 percent in 2023.
The market was hit earlier this year by manufacturing problems at fabs around Texas due to extreme bad weather (see Snow in Texas closes Samsung, NXP, Infineon wafer fabs) and then by fire (see Renesas wafer fab fire worse than first thought and Renesas hit again as TSMC wafer fab suffers power outage).
However, TSMC said in July 2021 that it was on pace to increase its 3Q21 wafer fab capacity by 60 percent for automotive microcontrollers compared to production outputs a year earlier and 30 percent higher than pre-pandemic levels.
IC Insights said that average selling prices for 32bit MCUs are expecred to rise 13 percent in 2021 to $0.72 after falling between 2015 and 2020 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -4.4 percent.
MCUs for infotainment are expected to account for 10 percent of automotive MCU sales in 2021 (about $780 million) while microcontrollers used in the other parts of vehicles (engine controls, power train, brakes, steering, power windows, battery management, etc.) are forecast to represent 90 percent of the revenues this year ($6.8 billion).
