Balcony solar storage: batteries and safety (watch the Elektor livestream)

Balcony solar storage is gaining momentum across Europe. But selecting the right battery technology remains one of the most critical — and confusing — steps for DIY and prosumer users alike. On February 19, 2026, at 13:00 CET, Elektor will address this challenge during a free livestream focused on real-world battery trade-offs and safety. Register today!

For eeNews Europe readers working in power electronics, energy storage, or residential PV design, the session offers a timely look at how small-scale storage decisions intersect with safety engineering, battery management, and practical deployment constraints.

Battery choices for balcony power plants

During the Elektor Lab Talk livestream, Elektor engineers will chat with Dr. Thomas Scherer, a regular contributor with experience designing and building balcony power plants. While balcony solar systems may appear straightforward, battery chemistry selection can quickly become a long-term reliability issue. The livestream will help participants choose “the least-bad option” for their specific use case, taking into account both performance and failure modes.

Chemistry trade-offs, safety, and the role of the BMS

Rather than offering a basic introduction, the livestream will dive into the engineering realities behind battery selection. Topics include trade-offs between chemistries in terms of cost, cycle life, charging behavior, temperature performance, and safety margins.

A major emphasis will be placed on battery management systems (BMS) and home safety. “Capacity” is often the easy part; safe operation is not. The show will cover what to look for in a BMS, what balancing can (and cannot) solve, and which fault-handling measures matter most in residential environments.

Community projects and giveaway

The livestream will also feature a live audience Q&A and a brief tour of several Elektor Labs community projects related to storage and balcony PV setups. To round out the event, Elektor is running a giveaway three copies of the book, Wireless Power Design.

For engineers and makers watching the fast-growing balcony solar market, the session offers a compact but practical guide to safer storage design choices. Register now!
