Electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid EVs and plug-in hybrids rely on large lithium-ion battery packs consisting of hundreds or even thousands of individual battery cells. Experts expect that 25% of the cars sold by 2025 will have an electric motor. Therefore, OEMs and Tier 1s require an intelligent battery management system for secure and cost-effective solutions with robust communication.

The MAX17843 complies with the highest safety standards and meets the requirements of ISO 26262 and ASIL D (and thus also of ASIL C). Its differential UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter) with capacitive isolation reduces component complexity and error rates. Developers can save up to 90% of the cost of insulation components. The UART enables robust data communication in environments with high noise levels – over distances of up to 100m. With the company’s proprietary daisy-chain architecture and an analog-to-digital converter based on the SAR (Successive Approximation Register) principle, the device performs fast and precise voltage measurements and achieves very good EMC. It can be used in a variety of applications in the automotive sector and in electric drives.
