BeDimensional gains €20 million to make 2D materials
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has offered BeDimensional SpA (Genoa, Italy), €20 million to help it scale up its manufacturing of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride.
The funding comes in the form of venture debt financing and BeDimensional said it would expand production following the inauguration of a factory in Genoa. BeDimensional said it plans to build a second plant in Italy to scale-up production of few layer graphene (FLG) and few-layer hexagonal boron-nitride (FLB) by 2027.
With EIB support, which is backed by the InvestEU programme, BeDimensional plans to increase its capacity to produce two-dimensional crystals more than tenfold to over 30 tonnes a year by 2028.
“We are committed to becoming a champion of this emerging market of two-dimensional crystals, securing Europe a leadership position in the production and supply of these advanced materials,” said Vittorio Pellegrini, CEO of BeDimensional, in a statement.
BeDimensional is a spin-off from the Graphene Labs of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, founded in 2016.
Graphene is widely recognised for its transformative potential in a range of industries including energy storage and conversion, smart textiles, paints, coatings and composite materials. Its most promising application is in battery technology, where it has been already shown to play a crucial role in stabilising silicon-dominant anodes.
